Vancouver Island musician hits the barn = I turn into a fan-girl
When a Vancouver Island musician commissions me to take their photo I get a little fan-girl-ish – (okay, a lot but I hide it enough to make it a “little”)
Reason 1: I can’t sing, I can’t play an instrument. I love music like I adore photography. If I wrote poetry (which is something I also can’t do), I would have equal amounts of love poems to both image making and music. If I had to choose between music or photography in my life I would choose music (gasp…) So I take my role as music-fan very seriously.
Reason 2: Musicians are the epitome of risk-takers, leapers through fear, followers of winding paths. On top of that, their art often helps us make changes, by helping us feel more. I stand in awe and inspiration of the braveness and the gifts they share.
When I first started corresponding with Amanda Usher about her photos I was freaking out – we have crossed paths a few times but not been able to really connect. I was so excited to meet this woman. Then we became friends on FB and my stalking of her taught me she also: cuts hair, works at the hospital, does her solo music and plays with a band, is really committed to being in love, is a mama (a hockey mama to boot), a step mama and has a smile that makes you swoon. This woman is unstoppable, and has a warm, enthusiastic contagious energy.
Capturing her was a JOY – there is no better way to describe it. It was all sunshine, despite the fact that it was freezing. Thank you Amanda for sharing yourself with me and the rest of us.
